Spring days in January

Our unfinished greenhouse :) We are storing building materials in here for now but hope to have them out soon. We had to put an electric fence around the greenhouse because one of our cats likes to climb on the greenhouse and she has put a lot of holes into the plastic.

Today I’m sitting here writing blog posts while Savannah is outside working on building the end wall for our Farmer’s Friend greenhouse. Outside is like a spring day with temperatures currently at 59 degrees and sunny. I’ve been cooped up inside these past 2 weeks because of a leg injury ( read more about that here or watch video here). What’s crazy is just last week our temperatures dropped into the single digits and now it’s like springtime. While I wish I could be outside to enjoy it more, I’m glad Savannah isn’t having to do as much work because of the cold weather.

When I injured myself I hurt my ankle and also a tendon on my lower leg. My ankle is pain free but I still have a lot of instability & discomfort on my lower leg. Uneven surfaces make it really challenging to walk, so I’ve not ventured much outside because our property is a death trap. But today, I did take a very slow walk outside to enjoy the fresh air and I went on an adventure - Hazel & I drove my car to the mailbox. Thrilling. Our mailbox isn’t too far from the house so I always swore when we moved here, that I’d never be the person who drove to their mailbox and that I’d always take the walk to the mailbox. But an injury has changed that. I also love checking the mail and rarely miss a day. Savannah doesn’t really care about the mail because it rarely contains something interesting. Unfortunately, today was one of those uninteresting mail days.

We still have our Christmas wreaths up because they are so cute. :) But come February 1 they are going into storage.

My other adventure for today was visiting our chickens. I primarily take care of the chickens and handle a majority of the animal care tasks. But now all of that and many other things fall to Savannah. What I did discover today is that Savannah has been depriving our poor chickens of treats. So I braved the journey and walked to their coop to feed them mealworms. Boy were they happy to see me. We have 3 “babies” that have just started laying eggs, so that is exciting! One is an Ancona named Mrs. Hall (let me know if you know where that name came from. I’ll give you a hint- it’s a tv show and a book) and she lays white eggs. Another is a cross between a Black Copper Maran and a Starlight Green Egger and she is laying medium brown eggs. She is yet to be named. The last is an Olive Egger X Starlight Green Egger mix that is laying an olive green egg and who also needs a name. The latest ideas are Kelsey and Liza.

Back to my blog writing- in addition to this post right now I am currently writing 3 different blog posts- one on if you should start a garden or not, one on raw milk, and another on my review of our experiment to not grocery shop for the month of January. I’m bad about starting a lot of posts and not finishing them. We have quite a lot of drafts, but I really want to load this blog up with lots of helpful articles. We have nearly 1000 blog posts on our Hey Wanderer blog, but it is 13 years old.

Last night we made pasta with a pasta machine Savannah got for Christmas. It was seriously the best pasta I’ve ever tasted (all gluten-free of course) but we still have a lot to learn. We had a hard time getting the texture of the pasta right and getting the machine to work properly. It was definitely user error. Cleaning the machine is a bit of a pain but our plan is spend a day making a bunch of different types pasta to freeze or dry. I don’t think we’ll want to bust out the machine just to make pasta for one meal. We’ll definitely have some video about the pasta making coming up soon.

Well I hope you enjoyed this update! I hope to keep you more updated like this as we are trying to get away from being on social media as much.

Stay Cozy!
